What is a passed pawn?

A passed pawn is a pawn with no enemy pawns ahead of it on its own file or the two adjacent files — nothing can stop it from being blocked only by pieces. Passed pawns are powerful in the endgame because they threaten to promote to a queen. As the saying goes, 'passed pawns must be pushed.'
