Can a pawn move backwards?

No. Pawns are the only pieces that can never move backwards. They advance one square forward (or two from their starting square) and capture one square diagonally forward. Because they can't retreat, pushing a pawn is a permanent decision โ€” the squares it left behind can become weaknesses.

Put it into practice.
