Grünfeld Defense

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5

The Grünfeld Defense is a dynamic and counterattacking opening where Black allows White to build a large center and then attacks it directly with ...c5 and piece pressure. It was Kasparov's key weapon against Karpov in their World Championship matches and remains a top choice today.

The Grünfeld exchange variation (4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4) is the critical test, where White builds a massive central presence. Black fights back with ...c5, ...Bg7, ...Nc6, and massive piece activity to compensate for the pawn center. Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura regularly employ the Grünfeld as a dynamic weapon.
