The Dutch Defense is an aggressive and fighting response to 1.d4. By playing 1...f5, Black claims kingside space and sets up for a future kingside attack. It was a regular choice of Magnus Carlsen in his formative years and has been used by Mikhail Botvinnik, Bent Larsen, and Viktor Korchnoi.
The Dutch has three main systems: the Stonewall (pawns on d5, e6, f5), the Classical/Ilyin-Zhenevsky (pawns on e6, d6, f5 with ...Be7), and the Leningrad (fianchetto on g7 with ...g6). Each system creates unique kingside attacking chances.
