Catalan Opening

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.g3

The Catalan Opening combines a Queen's Gambit pawn structure with a kingside fianchetto. The bishop on g2 is a powerful long-range piece that puts pressure on the queenside and the d5-pawn. Vishy Anand used the Catalan to win the 2010 World Championship and it remains a top-level weapon.

The Catalan generates subtle but persistent pressure on the queenside. If Black accepts the c4-pawn (Open Catalan, 4...dxc4), White gets long-term positional compensation with the active g2-bishop and open c-file. The Closed Catalan (4...Be7 5.Bg2) leads to quiet strategic battles.
