What is a minor piece?

Knights and bishops are the minor pieces — each worth about three pawns. They're called 'minor' to distinguish them from the 'major' pieces (rooks and the queen), which are more powerful and operate along whole ranks, files, and diagonals. Developing your minor pieces quickly is a core opening principle.
