What is a back-rank mate?

A back-rank mate is checkmate delivered by a rook or queen along the king's back rank, when the king is trapped behind its own unmoved pawns and can't escape upward. It's one of the most common ways games end. The defence is to make a 'luft' โ€” a small escape square โ€” by pushing a pawn in front of your castled king.
