Can you promote a pawn to a knight?

Yes. Promoting to anything other than a queen is called underpromotion. A knight is the most common choice because it moves in a way a queen can't — sometimes a new knight delivers an immediate check or fork that a queen would miss. Promoting to a rook or bishop is rare, usually to avoid stalemating the opponent.
